Gene Simmons , from KISS , appeared on this week's episode of the American television show Dancing With The Stars as a guest judge, along with Bruno Tonioli , Derek Hough , and Carrie Ann Inaba . There, he was heavily criticized for his "sexist" and "offensive" comments.
The 11 pairs of participants took to the stage for a rock n' roll edition, opening the show with a performance of the KISS classic "Rock And Roll All Nite," followed by choreographed dances to the sounds of Bon Jovi , Aerosmith , Twisted Sister , Whitesnake , Scorpion , among others.
According to Forbes and Blabbermouth , what caught the viewers' attention were some comments made by Gene, which mostly referred to the women's physical appearance, and not to the quality of their performance and skills.
In the competition, Gene evaluated the pair Reginald VelJohnson and Emma Slater , who danced to Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock" (via Blabbermouth ): "Hey, Reggie, you've got a beautiful woman by your side who can spin and twerk and move you and all that." He also continued, saying that, as someone experienced traveling the world, "it's all in the attitude" and that "there's something about that pretty face."
On the social network X (formerly Twitter), users criticized Gene and his comments: “Gene Simmons was the worst guest judge ever on #DWTS. His comments were completely inappropriate for a family show and disrespectful to the female contestants.” They also commented on how the bassist was “drooling over the women” in the competition, being considered the “worst candidate for the position” of judge.
Other users also asked ABC, the network responsible for the show, to "apologize for bringing Gene Simmons on the show" for "subjecting the participants" to "inappropriate" and "disgusting" comments.
