Kirk Hammett , guitarist for Metallica , ventures into a solo project for the first time with the release of the EP Portals this Saturday, the 23rd.

These are four entirely instrumental pieces that blend the musician's different passions: classical music and horror film soundtracks. Initially, these pieces were intended solely as background music for Hammett's exhibition It's Alive , which is why the project presents a cinematic approach in each piece.

In an interview with Ultimate Classic Guitar , the musician revealed the differences in the creative process of Portals . “You know, there are no real limitations imposed on me. When I was working on those tracks, I didn't want to overexert myself. So I said to myself, 'If I can't do these solos in three or four takes, then I'll turn it off and wait until the next day, and then try to get it right in three or four attempts.' You know, that's what I did. These solos have no limitations,” he said .
