Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett Gabriel Medina at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on his social media.

The musician's passion for surfing is nothing new: Hammett embraced the sport in 2002 and, since then, has been occasionally seen in locations known for their waves, such as Hawaii, the Philippines, Portugal, Australia, and Morocco.

In 2008, the guitarist said in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil that he had met many surfers from Brazil and that he would love to come to the country to surf.

“I know there’s a lot of surfing in Brazil. I spend part of the year in Hawaii because my wife is Hawaiian and I’ve met so many Brazilian surfers in the water, surfing with me… With so much water, all I can think about is going to Brazil and surfing.”

Besides Kirk, bassist Robert Trujillo also surfs. In 2014, both were speakers at the Surf Summit, an annual event dedicated to surfing.

Jerome Brouillet 's snapshot of the Brazilian surfer was taken during a moment of celebration after Medina caught the wave with the highest score in Olympic history.

On the athlete's Instagram, the photo has already surpassed 2 million likes.
