Kirk Hammett revealed in an interview with Rock Candy that he considers Master of Puppets Metallica 's best album .

“Many of the songs from that era now sound the same and similar. But there’s really nothing on Master of Puppets that puts it in a specific period – in terms of sound, production, and recording. It’s my favorite of all the albums we’ve ever made,” said the guitarist (transcription via Loudwire ).

The creation of the work happened in the most natural and spontaneous way possible. “We weren’t trying to make a record that 35 years later people would put on and think it still sounded great,” Kirk said. “Actually, we didn’t intend to do anything. We were just doing our best and that’s what came out. From a technical point of view, when I listen to the album, I’m really surprised at how good it sounds after so much time. The recording, the songs, the production… everything is still solid.”

The musician also spoke about the participation of the late Cliff Burton in the project: “Cliff’s contribution to Master of Puppets was very melodic and musical. He wasn’t so into big, heavy riffs. He played melodic bass and a lot of other really, really cool things. When he died, it was the end of an era, and we all knew it.”

Produced by Flemming Rasmussen , Master of Puppets was Metallica's third studio album and the last with Burton. Recently, Hammett confessed that he hates playing the solo from the title track live .
