On Tuesday, April 8th, Kirk Hammett announced that he will release an entirely instrumental solo EP called Portals . The 4-track compilation will be released for Record Store Day on April 23rd and can be purchased at local record stores or through the Metallica website , according to Blabbermouth .

The website describes Portals as a project influenced by classical music, film soundtracks, and horror movies, noting that the idea behind the EP was for the songs to flow into one another.

According to Hammett (via Blabbermouth ), the initial idea was to create a soundtrack to accompany the It's Alive from his collection at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2017. The guitarist wanted to create music to play in the background while people visited the exhibition, and that's where the track "Maiden And The Monster" came from, which gave rise to the concept for Portal .

“I realized I could create different soundtracks for specific moments,” said Kirk Hammett. “These pieces of music are what I call ‘cinematic audio’; I’m creating sounds and musical pieces for the films that play in my head. I hope they will create films in other people’s heads in a similar way.”
