Kiko Loureiro joined Megadeth in 2015
Megadeth members, guitarist Kiko Loureiro and bassist David Ellefson, answered fan questions on various topics, including the importance of music theory in a musician's development.
“You don’t need to know theory to be a good musician. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. I think it can really destroy you!
When you’re starting out – if the teacher starts saying any name and you don’t play, waiting for someone to teach you the theory – it’s boring. So, first play and, if you want: “I want to know the theory, I want to understand why this chord sounds so good,” then you can learn it,” said Kiko.
Bassist David adds:
“Most of the theory is a sort of scientific explanation of the spirit of music (…).
I really learned that when you’re in a room and someone starts writing a song, then another guy says, “Oh, that’s cool!” And he comes in with the drums (…) This spirit that is inexplicable.”
