Kiko Loureiro has had the opportunity to work with great national and international metal singers through his years of experience in Angra and currently in Megadeth . In a recent interview with Heavy Talk , the guitarist drew a parallel between the songwriting style of Dave Mustaine and that of Andre Matos , Rafael Bittencourt , and Edu Falaschi .
When discussing the creative process behind Megadeth's new album, the musician mentioned that Mustaine's cancer and the pandemic were obstacles, but the songwriting method remained the same as in Dystopia (2016). “The band's style is different from Angra and from the way I make my music. It's cool that I learn, I see another way of doing things and it works,” he said. “Mustaine composes in a completely strange, bizarre, different way.”
Regarding Andre Matos, Loureiro described his time with the Maestro of Rock as "fantastic" during the recordings of Angels Cry (1993) and Holy Land (1996). "Andre had his own style, his own particularity, he was a very cultured guy," he analyzed. "Obviously, he had a very particular voice, he was a singer and he stood out too. He was a very good arranger, he was a methodical guy, the songs took a long time to come out. When they came out, they were ready, well arranged and very well done. He didn't create all the time, (...) he would stay in his room, work and come back with the perfect thing."
Edu Falaschi, on the other hand, had more spontaneity to start new songs, but he didn't deliver them complete like his predecessor, says Loureiro. "He lets loose, makes more songs, his compositions flow more easily," he explained.
Of all the musicians, however, Kiko Loureiro had the most affinity with Bittencourt's composition method. "Rafa also has more ease with it," he continued. "I think I was much more in line with his style of composing; I learned a lot from Rafael while being in the band."
Citing Ricardo Confessori and Luis Mariutti , the guitarist pointed out that each artist brought a unique style to Angra. “I learned a lot from everyone (…), each one very focused, the guys very studious with their instruments.”
