Despite being among the greatest metal musicians, Kiko Loureiro still considers himself shy. In a recent interview, the guitarist explained that this personality trait isn't always negative for a musician's career and even helped him in the beginning with Megadeth .
During a conversation with Heavy Talk, Loureiro was asked if shyness hindered opportunities early in his career. “Definitely, shyness always has a good side and a bad side. The good thing is that you're not the kind of guy who goes around saying a bunch of nonsense, right? So you're always quietly in your corner, observing,” he analyzed.
Reflecting on the matter, the guitarist realized that his more reserved demeanor was a positive aspect of his adaptation period in Megadeth. “I’m still quite shy in many situations and I observe a lot, I think that’s something that helped me a lot, even in my understanding of things within Megadeth. When you enter a completely new place, with people who have been there for a long time, you have to stay quiet, observe, understand where you are fitting in,” he continued. “But as time went on I loosened up a bit because I needed to, you start doing interviews here, radio there, TV and so on, you improve your communication.”
On the downside, there's the misinterpretation that other people might have based on a first impression. "I've always been very shy, very reserved, and (...) one thing that gets in the way is always having this kind of closed-off, kind of sullen face, and people dismiss you because you're not cheerful, you're just normal; so that's bad, at least for me," he concluded.
