Kerry King performed his first show with his solo band, which bears his name, last Tuesday night, the 7th, in Chicago, Illinois. The legendary guitarist and co-founder of one of the biggest names in thrash metal, Slayer , returned to the scene and performed a show that included 17 songs in the setlist, 11 unreleased tracks from his new project and 6 from Slayer.

The band, in addition to Kerry King, features drummer Paul Bostaph (his partner in Slayer), bassist Kyle Sanders ( Hellyeah ), guitarist Phill Demmel (ex- Machine Head ), and vocalist Mark Osegueda ( Death Angel ).

Metal Hammer magazine , King stated regarding the setlist for his solo band's shows: “For next summer in Europe, we’re going to play nine or 10 tracks from the album and, depending on the length of the set, fill it in with things I’ve done – something I wrote in Slayer or co-wrote. So nobody can say ‘he’s playing Jeff ( Hanneman , the late Slayer guitarist) songs,’ because although I love Jeff’s songs and he was a big part of my life, I don’t want to rely on that this year, on this album cycle. At some point, I’ll play ‘Angel Of Death,’ but there are so many faceless haters on the internet, I don’t want to give them ammunition.”

Kerry King's new album

The band will release their album later this month, titled From Hell I Rise , featuring thirteen tracks and written entirely by Kerry King. Production is handled by Josh Wilbor through Henson Record Studios in Los Angeles. Josh has previously worked with notable bands such as Korn, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Religion, and others.

King said the album is about “various religious topics, some war-themed entries, heavy stuff, punk stuff, doomy stuff and scary stuff, with Herculean speeds achieved,” adding: “If you’ve ever liked any Slayer at any point in our history, there’s something on this album that you’ll like, whether it’s classic punk, fast punk, thrash or just plain heavy metal.”

He added that there's more to come as well. "Even with one album finished, I still have many songs that need to be finalized," he said. "This is what I know how to do, number one is music, number two is metal. It's been part of my life for 40 years and I'm nowhere near finished."

Lamb of God and Mastodon Ashes Of Leviathan North American tour . The six-week tour will kick off on July 19 in Grand Prairie, Texas, and conclude on August 31 in Omaha, Nebraska.
