Guitarist chooses his favorites
Loudwire published an interview with Slayer guitarist Kerry King, in which he answers his Top 5 guitar albums: “These are the albums that were very important in my youth and I still love them. If something is really good, it will be good forever.” Check out the list:
Mike Portnoy chooses 10 albums based on their drumming
1. 'Melissa' (1983) – Mercyful Fate
“On this tour we’re on, I’ve been playing ‘Evil’ from Melissa with King Diamond. If someone had told teenage Kerry King that this would happen one day, he would never have believed it.”.
>2. 'Stained Class' (1978) – Judas Priest
“'Stained Class' is my favorite Priest album, period. They've had great albums since then, and certainly great songs, but for me this is the best metal album ever made. From beginning to end, it's perfect.”.
3. 'Vulgar Display of Power' (1992) – Pantera
“With 'Vulgar Display,' the band became what it truly had to be. 'Cowboys From Hell' was them getting where they wanted to be, but 'Vulgar Display' cemented everything: it's like they said, 'This is who we are. This is how we're going to sound until the end.' Kind of like 'Reign In Blood' was for Slayer.”.
>4. 'Dirt' (1992) – Alice in Chains
"Guitaristically, Jerry's playing style has always been exciting and interesting. 'Them Bones' is a brutal, heavy song. Jerry's tone on that song is insane. So many fantastic riffs and solos on that album. Jerry is a very emotional and tasteful blues guitarist.".
5. 'Sabotage' (1975) – Black Sabbath
“'Sabotage' is one of Black Sabbath's heaviest albums. From beginning to end, it doesn't let up. Hole in the Sky, Megalomania, those riffs are monstrous. They always leave me speechless. If you want to learn what a truly great riff is, try listening to those. Tony Iommi, what can I say? He's unique in every way. Nobody in the world sounds like him. His riffs are monumental.”
