Keith Richards remains one of the most unfiltered rock stars when it comes to criticizing other artists and musical genres. Recently, the Rolling Stones snubbed "trash pop" and scorned rap.
Richards' new controversial statements came during an interview with The Telegraph (via Loudwire ) about the Stones' new album, Hackney Diamonds , the band's first album of new material in 18 years, which will be released on October 20 (learn more here ).
In the conversation, Richards spoke ill of pop music as a whole. “I don’t want to start complaining about pop music. It’s always been rubbish. I mean, that’s the point. They make it as cheap and easy as possible, and therefore it always sounds the same; there’s very little feeling in it,” he said. “I like listening to music made by people playing instruments. That is, I don’t like listening to this synthesized, plastic elevator music that’s now the norm.”
The guitarist continued talking about musical styles he dislikes and gave a somewhat simplistic description of another very popular musical genre today. "Actually, I don't like hearing people yelling at me and telling me it's music, also known as rap. I can get enough of that without leaving the house," he stated.
And anyone who thinks that Richards's contempt is limited to musical genres further removed from rock is mistaken. Bands like Oasis and even heavy metal classics like Black Sabbath and Metallica have also been targets of the musician's sharp tongue.
