Hopes and Fears Keane 's debut and most successful album , turns 20 in 2024. Released on May 10, 2004, the album, produced by Andy Green , James Sanger , and the band themselves, topped the UK charts, becoming the second best-selling album of 2004, behind Scissor Sisters' self-titled album. Since then, it has been certified platinum nine times.
About the band
The British band Keane formed in 1995 in East Sussex, England. The members met during their time at Tonbridge School and formed the group which today consists of Tom Chaplin (vocals, guitar and piano), Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, bass and backing vocals), Richard Hughes (drums, percussion and backing vocals) and Jesse Quin (bass, guitar and backing vocals). The original lineup also included founding guitarist Dominic Scott , who left in 2001.
In 1995, Rice-Oxley formed a cover band with Scott and Hughes to play only songs that interested them. They were called Lotus Eaters . After hearing Rice-Oxley play piano during a show in Surrey two years later, Chris Martin invited him to join the newly formed band Coldplay , but he declined the invitation, saying that he believed in Keane's potential and wanted to continue in the group. After that, Coldplay's interest in a pianist waned.
That same year, Chaplin joined the group as vocalist and guitarist. With this, the band's name changed to Cherry Keane in honor of a friend of Chaplin's mother whom he and Rice-Oxley had known since they were young. When she passed away, she left money to Chaplin's family. The name was then shortened to Keane.
In 1998, the group had its first live performance of original material at a pub called Hope & Anchor. After that, the group spent 1998 and 1999 touring pubs in London.
At the end of 1999, the band recorded their first promotional single, "Call Me What You Like," and sold copies of it at their pub shows. A year later, they recorded "Wolf at the Door," which became a hit with fans. Shortly after this milestone, Dominic Scott announced he was leaving the band to focus on his studies.
The record label BMG signed the group in 2002, the same year Rice-Oxley wrote "Everybody's Changing," one of the band's biggest hits to date. Keane then switched from BMG to Island Records, believing the new label would be a better option.
With the release of their first major single, the band began to achieve success in the United Kingdom and the United States. In January 2004, Keane was named by BBC Sound as the band with the most potential to become a hit that year.
A month later, Keane's first release on Island was "Somewhere Only We Know," which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart in February 2004.
Hopes and Fears (2004)
Hopes and Fears was recorded at Helioscentric Studios in East Sussex between September and December 2003. The album takes its name from the lyrics of the song "Snowed Under," released as the B-side to the single "Somewhere Only We Know." "You've been looking everywhere for someone to understand your hopes and fears."
In addition to the big hits “Somewhere Only We Know” and “Everybody's Changing”, the album features the singles “Bedshaped”, “This is The Last Time” and “Bend and Break”.
With over 5.8 million copies sold worldwide, Hopes and Fears was the 11th best-selling album in the UK in 2000. In July 2011, it was ranked as the 9th best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK.
A sales success, the album also won over critics who defined it as a landmark in the history of alternative rock. This is due not only to the numbers, but also to the relevance and originality of the songs. Some critical highlights were the melody and lyrics, as well as Tom Chaplin's "rich voice" (via AllMusic ). Rolling Stone noted that the album "contains more hooks than most pop groups manage in their careers."
The legacy of Hopes and Fears is undeniable. The album paved the way for Keane, who are now celebrating 20 years on the road. As part of this celebration, the group has announced they will be coming to Brazil. The shows will take place on November 5th at Teatro Positivo in Curitiba, November 7th at Vivo Rio in Rio de Janeiro, and November 9th at Espaço Unimed in São Paulo. Tickets are on sale through the official Livepass website.
Their last visit here was five years ago, at the end of 2019, also at Espaço Unimed, which at the time was called Espaço das Américas.
