Josh Klinghoffer spoke openly about his departure from the Red Hot Chili Peppers , announced last December, on the WTF with Marc Maron .

There, Maron questioned the guitarist about his departure: “No, I didn’t know. It was a complete surprise. I mean, it was a big shock, but maybe not a huge surprise.” He then commented that Josh is friends with John Frusciante , the guitarist who returned to the band in his place.

“I hadn’t spoken to him in about 10 years, until Flea got married in October [2019] and we spoke briefly (…) The explanation is simple. There’s no animosity, I mean, the explanation is that John wanted to come back and rebuilt a musical relationship with the band, or with Flea, in recent times and…”. Then Macron interrupts: “Behind your back. They were playing together somewhere.”

Josh continues: “I think so. The moment they told me, I told them I wasn’t surprised. I’d already thought about it once or twice when I heard John and Flea were hanging out together. I didn’t know they’d been playing music or anything like that.”

At the end of the interview, the guitarist confesses gratitude and love for the band and its members: “The moment they told me, I felt a great love for the band. And love for everything I was able to do with them.”
