On May 16, 2025, drummer Josh Freese posted on his social media that he was no longer a member of the Foo Fighters . At the time of his departure, the musician stated that he received the news of his dismissal by phone without any explanation.
Now, in an interview with The New York Times , Freese spoke about the subject again. The musician stated that he joined the band as Dave Grohl Taylor Hawkins ' death .
“I joined the band as Dave Grohl’s drummer and as the guy who was supposed to save the day after the death of dear Taylor Hawkins. “So, taking his place, I had to be working at full throttle all the time,” he stated [transcription via Ultimate Classic Rock ].
Josh Freese also didn't go into detail about his departure from the Foo Fighters. The musician believes his exit was due to issues involving the band's management. Furthermore, he surprised many by revealing that he didn't identify with the group's sound.
“Looking back, it was probably more a matter of band management. It wasn't music I really identified with,” he concluded.
