Josh Freese, drummer for the Foo Fighters since May 2023, gave an interview to musician and producer Rick Beato , released last Tuesday, the 16th. The drummer talked about being invited to join the Foo Fighters, about working with Dave Grohl and the band, and also about other projects he has already done.
Freese, who mentioned knowing Grohl for years, even before Nirvana , said the invitation happened at Christmas 2022, in an informal call from Grohl while he was with his family. The drummer commented on not having an immediately enthusiastic reaction: “I didn’t say, ‘Wow! Yippee! This is so cool!’ I wasn’t that excited. It was almost like I was breathless. And I thought, ‘Oh my God,’” he said.
Foo Fighters announced their first tour since Taylor Hawkins ' death in May 2023, featuring a new drummer, Freese, who is the new choice for the group and Dave, the band's frontman and founder. The drummer has a long career and has collaborated with various bands, such as Paramore , Nine Inch Nails , The Offspring , Guns N' Roses , and other big names in rock.
In addition to commenting on feeling some discomfort about the circumstances of becoming the band's drummer, considering Hawkins' death, Freese also talks about the working environment with Grohl: "My God, I'm Dave Grohl's drummer! But he makes everything so comfortable, good and natural, the way we play together [...] It's all good."
