Joni Mitchell and Nils Lofgren are the latest names to join the protest movement started by Neil Young .
Last week, Neil Young had his catalog removed from Spotify after giving the platform an ultimatum – his music should not remain on the streaming service while Spotify prioritized the denialist podcast The Joe Rogan Experience .
The platform's decision to keep the podcast running sparked an outcry on social media with the creation of hashtags like #DeleteSpotify and #CancelSpotify. On her website, Joni Mitchell explained her decision and said she was standing with science and medicine.
“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify,” she wrote. “Irresponsible people are spreading lies and it’s costing other people’s lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the scientific and medical community in this discussion.” The singer also shared a link to an open letter signed by 370 healthcare professionals in protest against the appearance of anti-vaccine doctor Robert Malone Joe Rogan ’s podcast .
Nils Lofgren, of the E Street Band and Crazy Horse , also joined the movement and published a statement on Neil Young's website defending the medical community. “When these men and women, who are heroes, who have dedicated their lives to saving ours and healing us, ask for help, you don't turn your back on them for money and power. You listen and support them,” he wrote. His decision removes 27 years of his work from the platform.
