Mitchel “Mickey” Hyman, brother of Joey Ramone's widow Johnny Ramone, Linda Cummings-Ramone, accusing her of exploiting the band's legacy to further her personal interests.

Renowned as one of the greatest punk-rock influences in history, the Ramones were an American band formed in the Queens district of New York City in 1974, where all the founding members lived: Jeffrey Hyman, John Cummings , and Douglas Glen Colvin

With 14 studio albums and 4 live album recordings, the history of this punk band was marked not only by unparalleled musical quality, which earned them the title of precursors to one of rock's most famous genres, but also by various problems involving drug use and disagreements between band members.

Among the most well-known conflicts is the feud between Linda Cummings-Ramone and Mickey Hyman, then the owners of Ramones Productions. With a public history of not getting along, in August 2023, Joey Ramone's brother sued Johnny Ramone's widow in Manhattan Federal Court, accusing her of profiting from the band's image and legacy.

Dubbed a “professional groupie,” Leigh’s lawyers accuse Cummings-Ramone of violating federal law by seeking to associate herself with the image of the Ramones in a “personal and insatiable desire to draw attention to herself” (via Billboard).

In an excerpt, Leigh's lawyer states that "Ms. Cummings-Ramone has made and continues to make attempts to exploit and benefit from the name, goodwill, and legacy of the Ramones to try to push the false narrative that she is the heir." He continues: "She certainly is not. She is nothing more than an opportunist and offender." According to the accusation by Joey Ramone's brother, Linda is allegedly seeking to be portrayed as Johnny Ramone's widow and an "integral member" of the band.

The lawsuit also addresses the misuse of the surname "Ramone," used by Linda, as it is not a formal surname of her deceased husband, but rather a stage name that the widow allegedly used to promote annual events and reproduce music and products without the permission of her then-partner, thus exceeding the limitations imposed in a previous legal dispute.

Cumming-Ramone had already sued Leigh

The latest feud began in January 2024, when Cummings-Ramone sued Leigh in New York state court, alleging that he had “quietly” developed an “unauthorized” biopic. In the lawsuit, Cummings-Ramone said that any “official Ramones story” would require his prior approval: “Allowing only the defendants to tell the official Ramones story would be an injustice to the band and their legacy” (via Billboard).

Only eight months separate one lawsuit from the other, in which Leigh sued Cummings-Ramone with a similar accusation: using the trademark without authorization for personal gain.

The case was judged by an arbitrator named Bob Donnelly, who declared that: “Leigh and Ramone have the almost sacred mission of caring for the band’s creative work, protecting its iconic brand, and educating new fans to grow its legacy” (via Page Six). In the same decision, Donnelly limited Linda’s exclusive use of the surname “Ramone,” allowing its use only in conjunction with her married surname “Cummings.”

Following the lawsuit, Joey Ramone's brother stated: "I believe it is my responsibility to protect the Ramones name for the band members' use; and to do what is in their best interest, not mine.".

Also accused by some fans of being the cause of several fights between the members and of encouraging the band's end in 1996, Linda denies not only the accusations but also claims that her past relationship with Joey did not influence their breakup or affect her subsequent marriage to Johnny (via RollingStone).
