Brazilian singer-songwriter Johnny Monster released his new album, A Nova Era Do Só Você , in November via ForMusic Records. Featuring a new and more organic sound, the album includes 10 tracks that create Johnny's strongest and most conceptual work to date.
The creation process for A Nova Era Do Só Você began in an acoustic format, just guitar and vocals, at Aurora studio in late 2020. “I felt a very strong need to record these songs. They were composed at different times, but with common characteristics: they had a line, a 'Brazilian psychedelic folk country rock' style different from my other albums, where the songs have varied directions, mixing styles,” says Johnny. “This time, it’s almost like a 'concept' album; all the songs really complement each other.”
In an exclusive interview with Wikimetal , the musician provided a track-by-track breakdown of the album, telling fans where the inspiration for each song came from. Check it out below and listen to the entire album at the end of the article.
01. The Birds
Classic albums always have an unforgettable opening. I wanted this one to be like that, memorable. With a 7-minute epic psychedelic folk rock track.
02. Big City
For me, the best song on the album. A narrative about living in a metropolis, with a thrilling ending, complete with strings and everything.
03. Traps of Thought
One of the album's hits, fun, I like the lyrics. It has that classic country feel, but the fact that it's in Portuguese makes all the difference.
04. The Wind Carried It Away
Something like the Velvet Underground , hypnotic, with more abstract lyrics and the most guitar-driven music on the album.
05. Frequency
Another folk song, reminiscent of Raul Seixas's work, long lyrics, quotes from Walter Franco and George Harrison, I like that.
06. Storm
A song reminiscent of the beautiful songs of The Smiths, especially in Johnny Marr's guitar work with chorus and delay.
07. Wild Seas
This song is already familiar to my audience, a collaboration with Ricardo Galano from the band Não Há Mais Volta Armada 's first album .
08. Oh Yeah!!!
Another collaboration, this time with Raphael Belchior, a composer and artist from São Paulo. Light and fun music.
9. So That Hope Doesn't Go Away
The most moving song on the album, I made it in homage to the group Os Pitais , which does benefit performances in hospitals, shelters, CAPS (Psychosocial Care Centers), etc., and of which I am a part.
10. The New Era of Just You
Like the first track, the last one on an album has to be strong, as is the case here. A solemn arrangement, guitar, vocals, bass and strings, it closes the album perfectly, one of my favorites.
