Johnny Marr revealed the reason for rejecting a recent offer that included "a large sum of money" for a Smiths , and the guitarist said he doesn't regret doing so.

During an interview on the football podcast The Overlap [transcript via Louder ], hosted by former Manchester United captain Gary Neville , the former Smiths guitarist reflected on his time in the band. Marr states that he considered The Smiths "the best band in the world at the time," but also added: "I was having a lot of fun... until I stopped having fun."

In 1987, the guitarist decided he no longer wanted to be part of the band: “It was awful. It was truly unsustainable. It was an emotional decision, but it wasn't an impulsive one either. I thought about it for a long time and was really devastated. It certainly wasn't a career decision.”

Then, Gary Neville mentions the fact that other bands have reunited and are now making a lot of money, and questions why Marr rejected all offers to reunite with his former bandmates.

Johnny Marr replied: “Yeah, we got an offer quite recently, actually. But I said no. I’m not stupid, I just don’t think the vibe is right. A bad vibe. It was an exorbitant amount of money, but I also really like what I’m doing now, which makes everything much easier. I like where I am. I still need to hone my craft, I still want to write the best music I’ve ever written.”

Last year, Morrissey revealed he was ready to sign a "lucrative" deal to reunite The Smiths and claimed Marr ignored the offer.
