John Lennon 's iconic round sunglasses sold for £137,500 (approximately US$183,000). This is 20 times the estimated price.
Forgotten in the back seat of a car in 1968, the glasses were put up for sale by Alan Herring , Ringo Starr and George Harrison . Herring explained that one day he picked up Starr, Harrison, and Lennon and took them "to the office."
“When John got out of the car, I noticed he’d forgotten his sunglasses on the back seat and that one of the arms had come loose,” he added. “I asked John if he wanted me to fix them. And he replied, ‘Don’t worry, they’re just part of the style.’ I didn’t fix them; I left them as they were.”
“John Lennon and his iconic sunglasses are inseparable. (…) They are the most mythical sunglasses in the history of rock and roll,” said Gabriel Heaton , a specialist in books and manuscripts at Sotheby's, the company that auctioned the accessory, in a statement.
