John Cooper , vocalist and bassist of the Christian rock band Skillet , gave his opinion on the use of music at rallies, especially in light of Donald Trump has been doing .
Cooper's opinion differs from that of some artists. During the 2020 presidential race, several artists , including Bruce Springsteen , Rihanna , Phil Collins , and Beyoncé , spoke out against Trump's use of their music, with many calling for their songs to be disassociated from his campaign.
During an appearance on The Jacob Buehrer Show ( via Blabbermouth ), Cooper expressed his thoughts on the different meanings that music can have for different audiences.
Cooper stated that, in the past, his position has always been in favor of anyone using his music. "I love this country and I don't care if someone plays my song," he said. For him, the use of his music does not imply political support. "I wouldn't see someone playing my music as a way to support Barack Obama or any other candidate," he added.
Even so, the band's leader acknowledges the current political polarization, and this makes him reconsider his thoughts. "The world is very strange right now, and that really saddens me," Cooper admitted.
Asked how he would react if a presidential candidate used his music, Cooper said he would "never call his lawyer and ask him to stop." The bassist also said he wouldn't care, even though he wouldn't vote for the candidate who uses his music.
Finally, Cooper concluded: "If anyone wants to use my music, go ahead."
