Drummer gives emotional speech
Former Slipknot Joey Jordison spoke at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in London tonight, revealing that towards the end of his time with Slipknot he suffered from a degenerative neurological disease that severely impaired the movement of his legs. Here's an excerpt from the speech:
Corey Taylor says he might not stay in Slipknot forever.
“At the end of my career in Slipknot – and I want you to honor them too. We’ve accomplished so much in life, all of us, and I wish them nothing but luck and all the best. Because what we created in the basement of Des Moines, Iowa is unbeatable. It’s one of those things that’s simply unbeatable. I love those guys so much. Coming to the end of my career in Slipknot, I got very, very sick with a horrible disease called transverse myelitis, and I lost my legs. I couldn’t play anymore. It’s a form of multiple sclerosis, which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. And I managed to get up, go to the gym, put myself in therapy to overcome that shit. And if I could do it, you can too. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, more than anything.”
For people who have multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, or something like that, I am living proof that you can overcome it. And Metal, and these fans, will help you. This is the world, here. You can overcome it, it's no joke. Just the fact that Metal lives within you, you can overcome anything.”
Joey Jordison received the Metal God of the Year award at the ceremony. The drummer left Slipknot in 2013, for reasons that were never clarified .
