Jimmy Page: "Without that [shows and people] music means nothing"

"We need to play with people, we need shows, and we need community," he states

Jimmy Page , legendary guitarist of Led Zeppelin , shared reflections on music and live performances sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview for the December print edition of GQ [via NME ], the artist said, “When we first went into quarantine, I thought, ‘Okay, now is the time to start thinking about returning at some point and being able to perform live,’” which, unfortunately, doesn’t have a concrete date for that return, as we well know.

This uncertainty causes Page a lot of concern, as he reveals, “It’s such a sad and desperate time, and what this virus has done internationally to families, to the arts, and to everything we love and hold close, and this whole situation with concerts, worries me. I’ll never be one of those people who will record alone and send someone a file. I never got into music in the first place to do that; it was to play together, and that’s what it means.”

“We need to play with people, we need shows, and we need community. Because without that, music means nothing,” he states. “Playing live is so important for young musicians. When we were young, we had all these small gigs, hoping to play somewhere bigger, and it’s such an important part of that communion of musicians playing together. For me, it’s always been the most important thing.”
