Metallica 's hit songs are from the Black Album , an iconic work that is still considered one of the greatest in metal.
Among these hits is "Enter Sandman," the album's opening track. A classic from the band, it pleases almost everyone. Almost everyone, because one of the song's authors doesn't believe the track has all that power.
During an interview with Metal Hammer, Jason Newsted , bassist who was part of the band for 14 years and co-wrote many of the band's hit songs, including "Enter Sandman," revealed that he is not a fan of the song.
“'[Enter] 'Sandman' I found kind of cheesy, honestly,” he said, adding that his favorite is “Sad But True.” The musician said that this is “the highlight of the whole project, in my opinion.” Newsted also commented on “Nothing Else Matters,” saying that it gave him goosebumps, but at the same time scared him too much.
Newsted, who left the band in 2001, also reflected on the magic of the project: “What’s beautiful is that we all sat in the same room and played loud for everyone to hear and participate. It took 70 takes for 'Nothing Else Matters' to get the way it did. Then you get so close to getting it right that you wonder, 'how can we make this as delicate as possible?'”
