Drummer Alex Van Halen has been less musically active since the death of his brother, Eddie Van Halen , but according to Jason Newsted , a new Van Halen tour was considered.

In an interview with the Palm Beach Post , Newsted said that Alex contacted him about six months ago with plans including a possible tour, but the idea apparently didn't go ahead.

According to the newspaper, Alex Van Halen contacted Joe Satriani to play guitar and would leave the bass to Jason. Newsted reportedly agreed to travel to California and jam with the musicians to get a feel for the vibe, but ultimately decided it would be impossible to do justice to Van Halen's legacy.

“How could it be possible? Nobody is up to the task, so how can anyone honor him? I didn’t want to be seen as an opportunist. And then everything kind of fell apart,” says the bassist.

In the same interview, Newsted also said that he would "definitely" return to Metallica if invited by the band. "I was completely committed to the band. I couldn't have been more devoted to them," he commented.
