The revelation came in a recent interview with Clash.
In a new interview with Clash, Metallica guitarist James Hetfield answered whether he's ever had to accept things he didn't fully agree with during Metallica's career, considering the band's growth into the mainstream. He replied:
"It's interesting, because we created our own mainstream, I think. We've always been very true to ourselves, including that aspect of having to be content."
“But there was always something we didn’t fully agree on – especially in a band with four guys. You have two guys making the decisions, Lars and me – and when we disagree, someone has to give in and compromise. But doing something that really doesn’t seem right, I imagine that might have happened a few times – the ‘Load’ and ‘Reload’ era, for me, was one of those times. The way things were going, I didn’t 100% agree with it, so I think that’s one of those times I compromised. I said, ‘I’m going to trust Lars and Kirk’s vision. You guys are doing this with so much passion, I’m going to jump on board too, because if all four of us are in this, it’ll be better.’”
So I did my best, but it didn't turn out as good as I expected, but again, no regrets, because at the time it seemed like the right thing to do. So if sometimes we have to compromise a little for the good of the band, I will always do that.
Regarding the mainstream, I think we've always been very honest and open about what we really want and what we don't want. This is our party. And you're invited! Everyone is invited!
