James LoMenzo , current bassist for Megadeth , recalled details of how he joined the band in 2006. During an appearance on Artist Breakthrough Stories , LoMenzo spoke about the beginning of his time with the group ( via Blabbermouth ).
“At first, I felt like a fish out of water. I understood the music. I could play it, but I thought: 'How do I deliver this? What do I do with this?'”
LoMenzo's first stint with the band was between 2006 and 2010, when he recorded the albums United Abominations (2007) and Endgame (2009). The bassist returned in 2021 , after David Ellefson was fired for involvement in a sex scandal .
LoMenzo and the connection with the audience
The bassist was also asked about the challenge of playing the music and making the fans feel it visually.
“In Megadeth, I have room for grander gestures. I can raise my fist to the guy who’s raising his fist to me at the right moment, and look him in the eye and say that I see him and that he should know that I like that too.”.
“There’s something transformative about these moments, something that makes metal really work. And I think that’s the best thing about metal. It’s like building a community, a church instantly with the audience, and vice versa.”
