In an interview on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast, guitarist James Hetfield spoke about his relationship with Dave Mustaine and his emotional growth. Hetfield was asked about what his relationship with Mustaine is like today:
“There’s no reason why things shouldn’t be good between us. At this point, we’ve all had setbacks, we’ve all been at rock bottom, we’ve recovered, we’ve all learned from those things. At the end of the day, they’re journeys – we’ve all had different journeys – and why hold a grudge against anyone, or vice versa?”
James shared an experience that helped him mature emotionally, when inducting Black Sabbath into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
“I saw the light on that. I think that made me realize that… You know, you see Ozzy sitting at one table and everyone else sitting at another table, them not wanting to play together, and them being introduced. So we went up and played Sabbath songs for them. It was beautiful for us, but it was sad to see that.”
I'd rather see them playing. No matter what it is, please put it aside. I understand – I understand it's hard to overcome certain things – but there are things in my life that I thought I'd never be able to overcome. It's about seeing beyond that, seeing things as a whole, no matter what you need to do, you can overcome the most unbelievable things.”
