In the latest Wikimetal poll, James Hetfield was voted the best guitarist/vocalist, with 36% of the votes. Dave Mustaine and Zakk Wylde came in second and third place, with 14% and 13% of the votes, respectively.
Hetfield said that learning piano helped him with the task of playing and singing at the same time. He also says that some songs require more practice than others: “To play and sing at the same time, you need to concentrate more on one of the two things at certain times. But for me, it's now something natural ,” says Hetfield.
Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted said he learned a lot from Hetfield during his time in Metallica: “He’s the best at playing and singing, there are some parts he plays that are simply impossible and he still manages to sing with perfect vocals. He’s unattainable in that respect.”
