James Hetfield SiriusXM radio that the late Dimebag Darrell inspired him. The Pantera was murdered in 2004.
“It was a blessing to be in his life and him in mine. In the beginning, when we went to Dallas, we would meet up and hang out together. I remember Dimebag introducing me to some amplifiers that had a really full sound. We inspired each other. I inspired him, and he inspired me, without a doubt,” said the Metallica (via Revolver ).
Darrell was a huge Metallica fan and played covers of the band even before he met James.
Hetfield concludes the interview by talking about his desire to play drums: “Whenever I can, I go to the instrument, with Lars Ulrich ‘playing’ at being the guitarist and vocalist. It’s a kind of healthy competition between us.”
