In an interview with Marky Ramone on Virgin Radio, James Hetfield explains the inspiration behind the lyrics of "Here Comes Revenge" from the band's latest album, Hardwired... To Self-Destruct, and talks about how the idea of releasing a new album after eight years came about.
“We don’t want to be a band that just enjoys playing our hits, relying on our old repertoire. We want to remain relevant. We still have something to say, so the decision to make a new album was obvious.””.
“'[Here Comes] Revenge' came from… one of our fans. I tried to put myself in their shoes. This couple went to many of our shows, and their daughter, who died in a car accident, introduced them to Metallica. And then I thought, 'how can you find something good in the world to connect with your daughter – which in this case is our music, which she loved – instead of being angry and wanting to hurt the person who did this to her?' So I put myself in their place and thought about how revenge must bring a powerful feeling but doesn't satisfy that desire.”
