James Hetfield got a tattoo using the ashes of Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead . The design is an iron cross with the symbol of swords in the center.
Metallica 's lead singer posted a photo of the band on Instagram with the following caption: “With the steady hand of my friend and tattoo artist Corey Miller , this tattoo. A salute to my friend and inspiration, Mr. Lemmy Kilmister. Without him, Metallica would NOT exist.”
He added, "Black ink mixed with a dash of his cremation ashes that were so kindly given to me. So now, he's still able to flip the world the middle finger." The phrase alludes to the location of the tattoo James Hetfield got with Lemmy's ashes, on his middle finger.
The symbols tattooed on Metallica's vocalist reference his friend's band. Lemmy frequently wore a pendant with the Iron Cross. The same is true for the sword symbol, reminiscent of the iconic song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy's ashes were given to friends.
Lemmy died at the age of seventy in December 2015. He was subsequently cremated, and some of his ashes were placed in empty bullets and sent to his closest friends. Besides James, Whitfield Crane , Rob Halford , Michael Monroe , Doro Pesch , and Riki Rachtman received this gift. The Motörhead vocalist and bassist's favorite bar in Hollywood was the Rainbow Bar & Grill , which will therefore receive another portion of his ashes.
During the unveiling of Lemmy's statue at the Wacken Open Air in Germany, his colleagues Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee scattered another portion of his ashes in the mud.
