During an interview with So What!, James Hetfield Metallica 's new album .
The album ended up being called 72 Seasons due to the band's majority vote, but despite the symbolic meaning behind the current title, Hetfield had another favorite in mind.
“In my view, I wanted the album to be called Lux Æterna because [that name] summed up all the songs for me. A kind of eternal light that has always been inside us and that is perhaps only coming out now,” says the vocalist. “And I lost by a majority vote, which is great. 72 Seasons is more digestible. You can figure out what it is, dig a little, and chew some more. But the color came from Lux Æterna. ”
The color James Hetfield is referring to is the bright yellow of the 72 Seasons , which has been present in Metallica's aesthetic since the release of their first single, "Lux Æterna." During the same interview, the artist explained that he sees the color yellow as a "source of goodness" and likes how it contrasts with the color black.
In December, James Hetfield explained the concept behind the name 72 Seasons in detail and spoke about the influence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal on the single “Lux Æterna”. Metallica's new album will be released this Friday, April 14th.
