With a career spanning generations, Jacoby Shaddix , vocalist of Papa Roach , has experienced firsthand what it's like to mature in the spotlight. Since his breakout hit "Last Resort" in 2000, he's gone through highs and lows, and today he reflects lucidly on his 25 years in the business. In an interview with radio station X107.5 Las Vegas, hosted by Carlota ( via Metal Injection ), the musician shared his memories, lessons learned, and personal transformation over the decades.
When asked about the time when the megahit “Last Resort” was released, in 2000, Shaddix stated: “I’m a completely different person from that guy. I always cared about people, but I was young and reckless. And, to do what we do, you need to have a certain degree of narcissism, in a way.” With maturity, the musician acknowledges that there is still a connection between the impulsive young man of the past and the man of today:
“There are common traits and a link. I am still compassionate, but definitely less reckless.”
The day Sharon Osbourne "slayed" Jacoby
During the conversation, Shaddix also recalled a defining moment in his career: the dressing-down he received from Sharon Osbourne , Ozzy Osbourne , after a controversial incident at Ozzfest 2001. At the time, Papa Roach fans caused widespread chaos during the show, with performances by Slipknot and Ozzy himself still to come. "I received a verbal assassination from Mrs. Osbourne. I needed that shock at that stage. I could have gotten into serious trouble. It was quite a lesson. Don't mess with Sharon," he recalls.
Rebirth and maturity
Today, Shaddix is living a new chapter in his life and career. He celebrated 13 years sober in 2024 and remains fully active with the band. Papa Roach still has some tour dates in the United States and is preparing a new North American tour for this year. Jacoby concludes his reflection with pride in his journey: “We’ve come a long way. And there’s still much more to come.”
