To celebrate the seventh anniversary of his record label, Third Man Records, guitarist Jack White sponsored the creation and release of the Icarus Craft, a record player that traveled through space to play the first vinyl record outside of Earth.

Icarus was launched from a high-altitude balloon last Saturday, featuring a recording of "A Glorious Dawn ," a track with Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. The vinyl record was gold-plated to withstand temperature changes without suffering physical alterations.

Jack White said in a statement:

“Our goal from the beginning of this project was to encourage imagination and inspiration in the daily lives of music lovers. Combining our creative impulses with discovery and science is our passion, and it’s very exciting to decide to do something that has never been done before, and to work towards achieving it.”
