"It was April 1st and I was in the bathroom," reveals Kirk Hammett about the moment he was invited to join Metallica.

"Was that an April Fool's Day prank?" the guitarist wondered after hanging up the phone.

Who doesn't fantasize about moments when we achieve our biggest dreams, right? For Kirk Hammett , the phone call that changed his life, the invitation to join Metallica in 1983, came in a rather… humble setting.

In an unpublished 2014 interview with Metal Hammer , the guitarist recounted the momentous occasion, “It was April 1st and I was sitting on the toilet. I got a call from Mark Whittaker [Metallica's sound engineer], and after I hung up, I was like, 'I can't believe I just got that call. Was that an April Fool's Day prank?'” As we know so many years later, thankfully, the call was no prank at all.

To join Metallica, Hammett had to leave the band he helped found, Exodus, and despite the less-than-friendly reaction from the members , Kirk went ahead, even using riffs originally created for his former band for Metallica, and the guitarist doesn't regret the decision.
