It's hard to think of many other bands that could warm up the crowd better than Airbourne . With a frenetic performance, Joel O'Keeffe and company quickly win over the audience. From the opening with "Ready To Rock," through the excellent "Breakin' Outta Hell," and closing with "Running Wild," the band plays their rock 'n' roll, heavily influenced by AC/DC , with unparalleled determination. Throwing beer into the air, jumping off the monitors, or even getting off the stage and being carried on a security guard's shoulders into the crowd, Joel has a blast playing for thousands of fans on his first visit to Portugal.
After them, Within Temptation has the mission of keeping the spirits up… but with Sharon den Adel , the task becomes much less arduous. Sporting a gothic crown and seeming very happy with the warm reception, Sharon is all smiles. A treat for fans of symphonic metal, the band is extremely competent in what it sets out to do, and songs like “Faster”, “Ice Queen” and “Mother Earth” draw applause from the entire National Stadium, which by then was quite full.
But there's no way around it, the night belonged to Iron MaidenLegacy Of The Beast tour , now with songs from their latest album Senjutsu in the setlist, the metal giants enter the field with the game already won. Even opening the show with a trio of "new" songs ("Senjutsu", "Stratego" and "The Writing On The Wall"), the fans' reaction is like a World Cup final. Starting with an ancient Japanese theme, the stage quickly changes and adapts while other classics are played.
Thanking the “Killer Crew” (as they call the band's crew) for the European tour, which was ending that night, “Blood Brothers,” the only song from “Brave New World” in the setlist, moved everyone present. Another highlight was “Flight Of Icarus,” with Bruce Dickinson (now 63 years old!) shooting fire through the air and singing the chorus at the top of his lungs.
The production is as impressive as the band's vitality: it's almost a two-hour show, and yet the group maintains high energy throughout the entire setlist. So much so that the last song of the night is "Aces High," one of their fastest and most demanding songs, especially for Dickinson's voice.
