In an exclusive interview with Chaoszine , Nicko McBrain , legendary drummer of Iron Maiden , detailed the reasons that led him to end his touring career after 42 years.
The 72-year-old musician described the decision as "necessary" in the face of physical and emotional challenges, but reinforced his enduring bond with the band.
Nick officially announced his retirement from the stage on December 7, 2024 , during the final show of The Future Past at Allianz Parque in São Paulo.
The drummer commented on what these almost two months have been like since announcing his retirement (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): “Mixed emotions, obviously. Making the decision to step away from touring was… it was easy at the time, coming to the end of the tour.”
“I kind of made my decision when we got to North America and talked to the guys about it, mainly Steve [Harris, Maiden bassist] and then the management team. And everyone said, 'Okay. If that's what you want to do, we understand,' considering my limitations since the stroke and everything else.”
Nicko also stated that the last tour The Future Past, was one of the most difficult of his career: “We kept pretty much the same schedule: show, travel day, show, travel day, show, two days off or one day off, travel day, that kind of thing. And it just… became too much for me.”
The drummer also commented on how he managed to finish the tour: “Even with all the training, exercises, yoga, trying to regain my mental agility and coordination. We did many things to stimulate the brain's neurons to function better again. And it was working well, but it was a great challenge for me.”
He also confided: "At my age, it's time for me to step aside and let someone else take over the drumming."
Despite leaving touring, McBrain will remain involved in Iron Maiden projects and will focus on personal endeavors.
He revealed plans for an autobiography, which will cover his career, health, and relationship with the band. "We're in the early stages, but it will be a way to share stories that have marked my life," he concluded.
