Shown in cinemas worldwide between May 7th and 13th, the documentary Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition tells the story of Iron Maiden and one of their greatest achievements throughout their five decades of existence: their legion of fans.
Even without including footage from recent interviews with the band members, the film directed by Malcolm Venville chooses to incorporate the audience as a large part of the narrative, since the band wished not to be editorially involved in the production, and we only have narrations with their respective voices.
The production features testimonials from fans and rock personalities
In addition to the general public — including Brazilian fans — the 1 hour and 40 minute film features appearances by big names in rock such as Simon Gallup ( The Cure ), Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine ), Lars Ulrich ( Metallica ), Gene Simmons ( KISS ), and Scott Ian ( Anthrax ). Outside of the rock genre, the presence of Spanish actor Javier Bardem , known for being a longtime Iron Maiden fan, is noteworthy
For those who want to learn more about the history, the documentary doesn't go into much detail about the band's 1970s phase, early lineups, album compositions, etc.
Although its focus is on the release of their self-titled debut album in 1980, the work showcases interesting moments, such as a statement from former vocalist Paul Di'Anno (who passed away in 2024) about his departure, Bruce Dickinson 's entry and exit in 1981 and 1993, respectively, Adrian Smith 's departure in 1990 due to burnout, the arrival of Janick Gers , and the realization of the World Slavery Tour behind the Iron Curtain in 1984 — the highlight of which is the accounts from Eastern European fans about how they listened to the tracks amidst the restrictions of the Cold War.
For fans who want to get to know the band even better, the following productions are recommended: Flight 666 (2009), 12 Wasted Years (1986), Death on the Road (2005), Behind The Beast (2012), Behind The Iron Curtain (1984), and the three parts of The History of Iron Maiden (released between 2005 and 2013 as DVD extras).
There is also a brief passage about the controversial Blaze Bayley era, the Ed Force One plane, among other events recounted through restored and previously unseen archival footage.
'Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition' reinforces Eddie's legacy and relationship with Brazil
Also noteworthy is the importance of the mascot Eddie, who, through 3D animations, is described as "the greatest marketing tool in the history of metal." Throughout its history, it has had several versions and has become an icon not only for the band but also for pop culture. Its image has become timeless to the point that many people take a considerable amount of time to actually discover who the musicians in the band were.
An important part of Maiden's history, Brazil is mentioned several times, mainly in the historic performances at Rock in Rio 1 (1985) and Rock in Rio 3 (2001), and also the Manaus show in 2009, cited by manager Rod Smallwood in the list of the most important performances in the sextet's history.
The emotional aspect is also tested when the plot follows Bruce Dickinson's cancer diagnosis in 2014, his triumphant return to the stage on The Book of Souls World Tour (2016), and Nicko McBrain 's final show in 2024 at Allianz Parque. Because of this, holding back tears becomes a real challenge for the viewer.
The book introduces the band's universe to those who are not yet familiar with it
Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition also skips over moments from the Iron Maiden's current phase, such as the beginning of the progressive phase starting with Brave New World (2000), the behind-the-scenes of the grand Legacy of The Beast World Tour, and the promotion of Senjutsu (2021), the band's most recent album.
Despite all this, the documentary fulfills its purpose very well: it offers the opportunity to see your favorite group on the big screen, alongside their "blood brothers," and introduces their world to those who are not yet familiar with it.
Therefore, one thing is certain: once you're a fan, you become part of the Maiden family and you'll never be the same again. As said in "Iron Maiden": no matter where you are, Iron Maiden will find you, no matter the distance.
