The attractions are clearly of high quality and far surpass those of the last edition

by Paulo Henrique Faria

The 5th edition of the Rock in Rio (RIR) music festival will take place in the second half of September in Rio de Janeiro. Among the days that interest me most, I highlight September 19th (Metal Day) and September 22nd. The first will feature Sepultura, Ghost BC, Alice in Chains, and Metallica on the main stage, respectively. On Sunday, the final day, we will have Kiara Rocks, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold, and Iron Maiden.

The acts are clearly high quality and easily surpass those of the last edition, held in 2011. However, what caught my attention was the inclusion of big names in Brazilian and international Metal on the alternative stage; better known as the Sunset Stage. On the 19th, for example, there will be Sebastian Bach (ex-Skid Row) and Rob Zombie (ex-White Zombie). Illustrious figures with extensive careers and renown earned with their former bands. Not to mention the solidified solo careers of both. I believe the Medinas (organizers of Rock in Rio) were right to bring these groups, but putting Sebastian Bach and Rob Zombie on the Sunset stage, while Ghost and Alice in Chains perform on the main stage?!

Nothing against the guys, I even like Alice in Chains' sound, but I believe they belong to the Grunge style and shouldn't play on a day dedicated to Heavy Metal. As for Ghost, I listened to the Swedes' sound, there's nothing innovative about it. It's just another Doom Metal band that attracts more attention for its dark and iconoclastic look than for its sound quality. I believe they don't have even 1/3 of the fans and admirers that Sebastian Bach, for example, has. I think the best thing to do would be to at least reverse the order. That is, put Bach and Zombie on the main stage, Ghost and Alice in Chains on the Sunset stage. That would be the least that could be done.

Despite the drawbacks, I conclude that this edition will be better than the previous one, because it will feature more rock bands than any other musical genre

On the 22nd, which is actually more "Metal" than the actual day dedicated to the genre, the main lineup consists of Kiara Rocks, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold, and Iron Maiden. Meanwhile, the Sunset stage will feature André Matos + Viper, Destruction + Krisium, Helloween + Kai Hansen, and Sepultura + Zé Ramalho. This is by far the best day, but it presents some inconsistencies in the choices and redistribution of space. How can you leave a supergroup like Helloween, with thousands of fans and 30 years of career, on the smaller stage and put the São Paulo-based Hard Rock band Kiara Rocks on the main stage?

The bands from São Paulo play well, they make a cool sound, with lyrics in Portuguese and everything, but I believe they should switch places with the German headbangers. Despite the drawbacks, I conclude that this edition will be better than the previous one because it will have more rock bands than any other musical genre. Other good acts like Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Nickelback, Living Colour, The Offspring, Frejat, Capital Inicial, Skank, Detonautas, Hibria, and Almah contributed to the festival's improvement. And I haven't even mentioned names that have nothing to do with it, like Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, and Ivete Sangalo! After all, it's "Rock in Rio" and not "Pop in Rio," isn't it? I just ask that Medina put the biggest and best names on the World Stage in the next edition. We, the true rock fans, will be very grateful.
