Doom metal, philosophy and science
Formed in 1995 by brothers Fabio Barretto and Fabrício Lopes , now in the band Mensageiros do Vento , Imago Mortis has become a prominent name in Brazilian doom metal over the years.
It was in 1998, with the addition of vocalist Alex Voorhees for the tour of the album Images From The Shady Gallery , that Imago Mortis began to take shape and prepare for the release of what was considered one of the most important albums in Brazilian metal, Vida – The Play Of Change , in 2002.
Vida , probably the band's most famous album, tells the story of a person suffering from a terminal illness called life. The album was composed after research with terminally ill patients and includes an oracle game based on the I Ching.
“Throughout the album, there are five stages that terminally ill patients go through,” said vocalist Alex Voorhees. “Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, which not everyone goes through. We created a story of a person facing death, going through these phases.”
"At a time when Brazil was in the melodic metal phase, Imago Mortis came along with a completely different sound; it was an album way ahead of its time."
Shortly after the release of Vida , founding members Fabio and Fabrício left Imago Mortis, and Voorhees took over the band for the release of Transcendental, which features themes of spiritualism and Buddhism, followed by an extensive tour throughout the country. However, in 2009, Imago Mortis declared its end, with the members moving to different cities and countries. The band's return was due to public demand, and in 2011, Imago Mortis reunited for a few shows playing Vida in its entirety.
With songs already semi-finished for years, it was only this year, 2018, that the band released the album LSD , once again delving into profound themes, based on studies by anthropologist Helen Fisher, philosophy, culture, and poetry. “The album talks about the myth of romantic love. Love is nothing more than chemical substances that act on the brain. Passion is a game. The human being is a puppet in the hands of nature. It intoxicates the person. They become addicted to the other, it seems like a disease. It's an addiction that numbs you, and the three bases of this are love, sex, and death. LSD – Love, Sex and Death .”
