Iggor Cavalera reunited almost the entire original Sepultura in the latest episode of the Beneath the Drums series , in which he revisits career classics and recounts the behind-the-scenes creation of each song.
To present a version of "Antichrist," a track from the band's debut EP, Bestial Devastation , from 1985, the drummer invited Max Cavalera and Jairo Guedz . Alongside bassist Paulo Jr. , who is not present in the reinterpretation, the three represent the band's initial lineup, as this was the first to enter the studio.
According to the drummer, the track was heavily influenced by black and death metal, with bands like Venom , Hellhammer, Kreator , and Destruction among the most relevant. “This is probably one of the first songs where I composed something on the drums. As far as I remember, Max and I wrote it in our room,” Iggor said. “In 1984, I didn’t have a drum kit, just some drum parts my parents gave me; I had a snare and a floor tom (…) and a cymbal that was on a broom handle with a nail. It was pretty rudimentary.”
