AC /DC has had a fair number of vocalists since its formation, including Dave Evans , Bon Scott , and currently, Brian Johnson . But a fourth name that almost made that list was Iggy Pop .
In a recent interview with The New York Times , Iggy Pop revealed that he was approached by AC/DC's manager about taking over as lead singer, but he didn't think he was the right person for the job (via Blabbermouth ).
“They had a manager for many years, back when I hadn’t reformed the Stooges , before I moved to England. This guy said, ‘Are you interested in joining AC/DC?’ They were looking for a vocalist,” he recounts.
“I listened to their album. I thought, ‘I can’t fill this space.’ It wasn’t anything like, ‘Ugh, I don’t like them.’ [The album] was quite well done. They do meticulous work, but I’m not what they needed,” he concludes.
Iggy Pop did not clarify when he received the offer or whether it came after the death of singer Bon Scott in February 1980. Scott died at age 33 from alcohol poisoning.
