The band became, for me, an example to follow and an inspiration to work hard and take risks.”
by Diana 'NoWay' Ungaro Arnos
Many years ago (7, to be precise) I thought about being the vocalist of a metal band. I always liked to sing, I always wanted to have a band, but, at that time, the bands I knew with female vocals all had that "fairy" vocal style (lyrical singing). Nothing against it, Nightwish and Within Temptation are two of my favorite bands to this day, but it wasn't for me. I wanted to sing strong and different, like the kind of vocals male singers usually heard.
As always, I went to Expomusic to check out the instruments and performances that usually take place. I passed by the Music Hall and read: Shadowside – Heavy Metal. Well, a Brazilian band, Heavy Metal… Why not check them out?
Their sound was phenomenal! You could notice some melodic metal influences, but it was a very characteristic sound of theirs; you couldn't say "oh, it's just like that other band". Very well executed, it held my attention.
Then Dani Nolden started singing, and that's when my jaw dropped. I immediately thought, "Wow, what a powerful voice! Look, I think I can do that!" and I convinced myself that I didn't need to sing like a fairy to be in a metal band, and I had hopes of one day being on a stage like that.
After the show, my cousin, my friends, and I went to talk to the band. They were all very friendly, chatting and taking photos with great willingness. Besides all that, they were good people, believe it or not! After that day, time passed and I didn't get to follow much of their work.
They made me truly believe that with hard work and patience, I could succeed in the music business.”
Years later, while reading a rock and metal news website, I came across the following headline: "Shadowside begins its first US tour." My eyes widened and I rushed to read the news, thinking, "Look how far they've come!" Since then, I've never stopped following the band, and they truly made me believe that with hard work and patience, it was possible to succeed in the music industry. Every time I read a news story, I felt happy and proud for them, with the band becoming an example for me to follow and an incentive to work hard and take risks.
Now, 7 years later, I'm finishing recording my first album with NoWay. And I'll be at the show on May 26th not only to enjoy their incredible performance, but also as a show of respect for the amazing band they've become and to say my most sincere "thank you" for giving me an example to follow.
PS: My thanks to Daniel Mazzeo Pastrello for sending me the photos from that day, since I lost my backup a long time ago.
