Beth Roars already warned in the video "Metal Music Makes You Calmer? – The Science of Metal" : contrary to what popular culture might suggest, heavy metal can indeed be a source of calmness. Now, another study confirms the theory, adding that metal can lower blood pressure and even reduce anxiety.
According to hair transplant specialists at Vera Clinic , a study asked 1,540 volunteers aged 18 to 65 to complete nonverbal reasoning tests to reduce stress, while listening to a variety of Spotify and wearing heart rate and blood pressure monitors to study the effect of each playlist during the experiment.
The results revealed that, second only to the 80s pop soundtrack of the UK Channel 4 programme, It's a Sin , which reduced blood pressure in 96% of volunteers, heavy metal came in second in stress reduction, with 89% of volunteers showing a reduction in blood pressure and, among them, an average reduction in heart rate of around 18%.
“Angry music can help listeners process their feelings and, as a result, lead to greater well-being,” said Dr. Ömer Avlanmış of the Vera Clinic regarding the findings. “The results may seem surprising at first glance, but from a medical standpoint, they make a lot of sense. Pop hits from the 1980s may have a positive nostalgia attached to them for many people, and their upbeat and festive sounds can induce the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain, increasing feelings of happiness and calm.”
