Headbangers are happier

American study proves

The American medical journal "Self and Identity" published a study this week proving that metal fans are happier. The journal analyzed 387 adults: 154 who grew up listening to metal in the 1980s; 80 who listened to other types of music as teenagers; and 153 people currently attending the University of California who were chosen by the university's Department of Psychology.

The results conclude that adults who enjoyed heavy metal during adolescence had a happier and more balanced youth, and therefore a healthier adult life. These individuals were also less likely to regret things they had done in adolescence.

The newspaper also points out that the main reason for happiness is likely the sense of community. "Social support is a crucial protective factor for troubled youth ," the researchers noted. "Fans and musicians were able to experience high levels of emotion within the group."
