On the evening of last Thursday, the 9th, Guns N' Roses performed for the first time in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. However, the city's first major international concert was marred by serious infrastructure and logistical failures in its organization.
Held at the Orlando Moura Racetrack, the event was directly affected by a traffic jam of over 13 km on the BR-262 highway. Because of this, many fans were forced to abandon their cars, buses, and vans in the middle of the highway and walk about 10 km to the venue just to avoid missing the show. The city government did not provide accessible public transportation to reach the location [via g1].
As a result, the show, initially scheduled for 8:30 PM, was delayed by one hour and forty minutes, only starting at 10:10 PM. At 9:45 PM, the production team took the stage and informed the audience that the delay was due to "logistical issues." Reports indicate that, by 9 PM, only 16,000 of the expected 35,000 people had entered the Autódromo. Even after the show began, there was still traffic congestion for more than 6 km on the highway, which meant that many people only caught the last songs of the set.
Upon leaving, further problems arose, as many drivers took more than five hours just to get their vehicles out of the area and onto the highway. Traffic was only fully restored and normalized by the Federal Highway Police around 8:00 AM this Friday, the 10th, seven and a half hours after the show ended.
The Guns N' Roses concert in Campo Grande was also marked by the death of a street vendor
In addition to the traffic problems and delays, the Guns N' Roses concert in Campo Grande was also marred by a tragedy: the death of a street vendor.
Leandro Pereira Alfonso, 36, worked as a rideshare driver and was outside the racetrack selling water when he suffered a sudden illness and died. According to his widow, the fire department rescue took more than an hour to arrive. Leandro had a history of high blood pressure [via g1].
