Greta Van Fleet fans : the band has released the previously unreleased track “Heat Above,” the third single from their new album, The Battle at Garden's Gate , which arrives on April 16th via Lava/Republic . This new release follows “Age Of Machine” and “My Way, Soon .
Zane Lowe 's prestigious Apple Music show to talk more about the single and the album, “In a way, [the song] acts as a sort of thesis on this whole body of work,” says Sam Kiszka [via Loudwire ]. “And it really is, I think, particularly a bridge between the previous album and the newest one. Years in the making. This song took years to make. This track in particular. I think it's the oldest track on the album.”
“We took it off the shelf, dusted it off, reformatted it, and did other things,” he continues. “And I think it’s been translated in a particularly interesting way because it’s lived through so much time and so much change, and I think it’s reached this point. But I would say that’s the story of a lot of the tracks, actually all the music we’ve ever done. Sometimes it just germinates and never gets planted. But this is definitely a full circle.”
Sam and Josh also detailed the band's sonic evolution on the new album. “One word that wouldn’t properly describe this album would be ‘ambient’,” says Sam. “I think what we did, and what we generally try to do, is create a really dynamic album. And I think that’s what we achieved here. It’s really like a puzzle, and each song is a piece, and everything is needed in that equation. And it was like the themes linked and connected from one song to the next. It really exists in the same world and connects to the same world as the previous album. But I think it’s the evolved form of Greta Van Fleet that’s here and now. And I think that’s what artists seem to try to do.”
“You don’t want to stagnate, ever,” Josh adds. “And I think we’re at that point where we can finally say, yes, Led Zeppelin is obviously a big influence on us, because we’re not making music that really sounds anything remotely like that. What The Battle at Garden’s Gate is, is the maturation of Greta Van Fleet’s sound and how Greta Van Fleet relates to the 21st century.”
