Billie Joe Armstrong Green Day 's shows : the selection of a fan to come on stage and sing a part of "Know Your Enemy." Alongside Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool , the vocalist explained why he almost always chooses to invite women.
During a recent interview with Chicago radio station Q101 , Billie Joe explained the criteria used. He stated that the decision is directly related to the meaning of the song. According to him, the female presence at this moment reinforces the message of resistance and energy that the group intends to convey on stage.
“Well, I always choose women. That’s because I think when they say ‘gimme, gimme revolution’ at the end of the verse, it has much more meaning than if we put some guy,” Billie said. [via TMDQA! ]
Asked if that was really the only rule in the selection, Armstrong confirmed, adding that the band already consists of "five guys on stage," which makes the inclusion of different representations during the show even more relevant. "It's cool to have that representation. Break everything! Represent! Have fun," he stated.
The practice, which has become a ritual among fans, reflects Green Day's history of encouraging active audience participation and reinforcing messages of inclusion, something present since the 21st Century Breakdown (2009) , when "Know Your Enemy" established itself as the band's political anthem.
