Green Day performed the legendary track “Basket Case” from their third studio LP, Dookie (1994, Reprise Records), in which the members brought out lyrics from old demos to energize the audience, along with “Bobby Sox” from their recent album Saviors (2024, Reprise Records).
The performance took place at the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2024 on Monday, December 1st, in Los Angeles, hosted by Avril Lavigne , who introduced Green Day and presented The Landmark Award .
Previously, Billie Joe Armstrong stated that he felt ashamed of the first verses of “Basket Case” (via NME ): “The real confession is that I was on methamphetamine when I wrote the lyrics. And I thought I was writing the best song of all time… As you know, with drugs, the effect wears off. And then, I felt like I had written the worst song ever.”
“I thought the lyrics were embarrassingly bad. I already had some songs that I wrote under the influence of drugs, but this was the most regrettable one I felt afterwards.”
